Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare Review: Bhumi Pednekar- Konkona Sen Sharma’s Sisterhood Saga Is A Unique Tale Of Women's Emancipation

Konkona Sen Sharma- Bhumi Pednekar starrer Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare released on Netflix today. The film has been helmed by Alankrita Shrivastava, and it also stars Vikrant Massey, Kubbra Sait, Amol Parashar and Karan Kundra. There were high expectations from this film, given the brilliant performers that were roped in, and we are here to tell you whether this movie is worth your time or not. Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare is a simple story of cousins Dolly (Konkona Sen Sharma) and Kajal (Bhumi Pednekar). Kajal, who hails from a small town, comes to stay with her cousin Dolly in Noida and is looking for a job. She finds one in a call centre, which provides ‘romance’ for men, and she starts working there by the pseudonym Kitty.

Dolly is a typical Indian homemaker with a seemingly perfect married life with her husband Amit (Aamir Bashir) and two kids. However, when Kajal tells Dolly that her husband Amit is hitting on her, Dolly insists that her husband’s friendly behaviour may have been misunderstood by her. Life isn’t as perfect as it seems, and later, Kajal moves out into a hostel. She finds herself falling for Pradeep (Vikrant Massey), a caller, who appears to be interested in her. Meanwhile, Dolly dreams of a better life, plans on moving into their new home and hustles for the money to pay for her new flat’s installments. Kajal, who hides details about her new job from Dolly, starts enjoying the freedom, discovers herself, and meets with new experiences as she stumbles along the way.

What follows, after a series of events, is Dolly learning about where Kajal works, and judging her for the same. Similarly, Kajal, who is aware of Dolly’s marriage, judges her too. It is very clear that both of them have different lifestyles and choices, however, they eventually realize that as women, their craving for freedom is the same. The film touches upon several topics along the way- women’s sexual desires, need for freedom, moral policing, societal judgement, among others.

Without giving out any spoilers, we can tell you this film has some never seen moments seen in Hindi cinema. Throughout the film, there’s a sense of intrigue, and viewers are left curious as to what will happen with the characters next. The pace of the film was a bit slow, especially in certain scenes. On a positive note, the parallel plots and backstories are intertwined and do not seem forced. The film mirrors us, our cravings and flaws and the need for love and respect and acceptance.

Overall, the characters’ performances were good. Konkona was brilliant, as usual, and Bhumi Pednekar left us impressed. Amol Parasher is such a natural and delivered his role as the delivery boy Osmaan with such ease.

Concluding the review here, Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare is a story of women's emancipation packaged in a unique avatar. It’s nothing over the top, but will definitely leave you with many thoughts.  Watch it once for the uniqueness of the plot!
